On May 20th, 2015, “The Open Repository of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)” has fully launched. The repository was aimed to collect the published article from NSFC funded projects, and freely opened these publications to the public. This marked China has entered a new stage of the development of open access.

As part of the infrastructure of Chinese academic research, the Open Repository of NSFC collects and saves the metadata and full article of the publication generated from research funded by NSFC and made these open access to the public. The purpose of the repository is to become a platform of disseminating cutting-edge basic research in scientific and technological knowledge and achievements, as well as promoting the scientific and technological progress.

Background: in May 2014, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) made a joint announcement of open access policy, demanding publicly funded research shall deposit the finalization of the paper publication of the research in the appropriate repository, and make it open access within 12 months after the publication.
